A-Ma, the deity of fisher folk and seafarers is one of the most revered goddess in Macau. According to legends, a boat caught in tremendous storm was about to sink. At this very moment a beautiful young women emerged and ordered the elements to calm down. The boat landed safely on the shores and on this very place the grateful mariners built the A-Ma Temple.
Macau’s name is also derived from A-Ma. Recently an enormous statue of A-Ma was erected at the highest point of Coloane Island. During the A-Ma festival, lots of offerings and religious celebrations are organized. The celebration is followed by performances of Chinese opera.
