Detail InformationEdit

Parambikulam Tiger Reserve, which also includes the erstwhile ‘Parambikulam Widlife Sanctuary’, is a 391 square kilometres (151.0 sq mi) protected area in Chittur taluk in Palakkad district of Kerala state, South India. The wildlife sanctuary, which had an area of 285 square kilometres (110 sq mi) was established in 1973. It has one of the largest population of gaur (bison). It is also a home to elephants, sloth bears, wild boars, sambhars, chital tigers, panthers and crocodiles. There are also bonnet macaques, spectacled cobras, kraits, vipers, turtles, darters, little cormorants and black eagles.

It  is open throughout the year, but is best avoided during the monsoon. Between June and August, the monsoon rains lash, making hillsides unstable and causing slush, mosquitoes, drippy roofs and other nuisances. Boat cruises can be arranged in the Parambikulam Reservoir. The rest house of the state forest department at Thoonakkadavu, Thellikkal and Elathode offer comfortable lodging facilities. A tree – house in the reserved forest area in Thoonakkadavu has to be booked in advance.

HistoryEdit

This Sanctuary were under two administrative units – the Sungam Forest Reserve and the Parambikulam Forest Reserve during the 19th century. In 1907, a tram railway was introduced here in order to shift the timber from the remote areas of the forest to Chalakkudy from where it could be exported by road. The area came under official protection and was declared a sanctuary in the 1960s. A special teak plantation division too was constituted from Parambikulam Forest reserve in the same year. Later the Teak Plantation Division was merged with the already notified sanctuary and by 1985, the Parambikulam Sanctuary, about 285 sq km, was officially opened.
