Panchgani, literally mean the place of five hills, is a renowned hill station in Maharashtra. This majestic hill resort is located at 1,334 mt altitude. Panchgani is a vibrant scenic destination and its beauty multiplies with the backdrop of hilly terrains at one side and coastal plains at the other side. This place had been used by the British officials as their summer resort.The Panchgani hill station is known for its unpolluted air and it is believed that the oxygen content in atmosphere is more here compared to other regions. Panchgani, the valley of five hills, is christened after the fact that it is surrounded by the ‘panch’ (five)‚ Äògani’ (hill) viz. Dhandeghar, Godavli, Amral, Khingar, and Taighat. As with many other hill-stations in India, Panchgani was discovered and developed as a summer resort by British. A British superintendent by the name John Chesson is credited with planting many Western plant species. Originally, the British wanted to develop Mahabaleshwar as a summer resort. Chesson, surveyed the hills in the neighbouring areas of Mahabaleshwar and selected an area that is today known as Panchgani. Since then, this beautiful little hill-station has grown in popularity among travellers. Till 1980’s Panchgani was famous as a education hub and a health resort. From then on it also became a prominent tourist destination.

By Air : Pune, which is 95 km away from Panchgani, is the nearest airport. Pune is connected to Mumbai, Goa and Bangalore by air. Tourist taxis cost about Rs 2,000 from Pune to Panchagani.

By Train : Pune Railway station, about 95 km away, is the major railway station near to Panchagani. Pune is well connected to all cities in India by rail. Pre-paid taxi services are available from Pune to Panchagani which costs about Rs 2500.

By BUS : Panchagani is well connected by state road transport public bus services. Regular bus services are available from Pune to Panchagani. Super fast and Deluxe A/C buses are also available in this route. Bus fare is about Rs 300.
