Mayyanad is a beautiful village situated in Kollam district of Kerala and is about 10 kilometers south of Kollam city. Mayyanad can be reached by frequent buses from Kollam and Kottiyam and by local train from Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram. Mayyanad is situated on the banks of the Paravur lake. Mayyanad’s costal line along the Arabian sea is famous for its fishing. Several temples and shrines are there in Mayyanad. The shrine is said to have been consecrated by the great Hindu philosopher Sree Sankaracharya of Kaladi. Famous temple Valiyavila Madan Nada is situated in Mayyanad. The village also has churches and mosques.

Mayyanad is the birthplace of several prominent social reformers, such as C. Kesavan and C. V. Kunjuraman. The first Panchayat President was Prof. K. Ravindran who went on to become the founder principal of Mahatma Gandhi Government Arts College in Mahe and Tagore Arts College in Pondicherry.The Malayalam daily newspaper Kerala Kaumudi was founded in Mayyanad in 1911.
