Mananchira Square is an architectural delight named after the man-made lake Mananchira around which it is situated in the centre of the city. It is named after Manadevan Samoothiri, the erstwhile ruler of the Kozhikode Kingdom, known as Mana-vedan Chira (pond) and later transformed to Mana-an-Chira.. The architecture in Mananchira Square is reminiscent of the intricate craftsmanship of olden times. With its meticulously landscaped lawns, musical fountain& open air theatre, making this makes for a perfect setting to attract tourists.

HistoryEdit

Mananchira Square, is constructed around the Mananchira tank. The huge tank (chira) was built by the last Zamorin King, Mana Vikrama, and is fed by a natural spring. The Square is managed by the corporation of Kozhikode.The arch at the entrance guarded by Tipu Sultan’s cannons, the ethnic buildings around the Square all help maintain its old-world charm. The fairly recent addition of a public library constructed in the traditional style, inside the maidan premises, merges well with the ambience of the place.
