Sight Address : Jew Town is the narrow street between Mattancherry Palace and the Pardesi Synagogue. Edit

Detail InformationEdit

Jew Town is the narrow street between Mattancherry Palace and the Pardesi Synagogue. The synagogue is smack-bang in the middle of Jew Town, a bustling port area and centre of the Kochi spice trade. Scores of small firms huddle together in old, dilapidated buildings and the air is filled with the biting aromas of ginger, cardamom, cumin, turmeric and cloves. These days, the lanes right around the Dutch Palace and the synagogue are filled with antique and tourist curio shops rather than pungent spices. Look out for the Jewish names on some of the buildings.

HistoryEdit

Jew Town in Cochin still retains a distincly diferent ambience and charm, and is one more testimony to the great Indian experiment of synthesis of different religions. The Pardesi (foreigner) Synagogue was built in the Jew Town in 1568, and stands proudly next to the Hindu Temple, just outside the palace grounds. Once the Portugese gained control of Cochin, the jews had to suffer persecution in their hands till 1660, when the Dutch dispossed the Portugese. Majority of the Jews left Cochin after the formation of the state of Israel and the few who stayed back in the once prosperous Jew Town, are now engaged in anitique trade etc.
