Diwan-i-Am, famed to be a hall located in the middle of Agra Fort, is built in 1628 by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. This hall is meant for the public audience who assemble in Agra Fort. The architectural style of this pavilion is a perfect mix of Persian and Indian architectural styles. The hall is supported by well constructed forty carved pillars. This is the place where the emperor listened to the complaints of the citizens. Diwan-i-Am is constructed using the red sandstones. This is a piece of marvellous architectural beauty in Agra. A renowned Masjid known as Nagina Masjid is placed nearby.

Diwan-i-am and Diwan-i-khas are two majestic structures in Agra Fort. Diwan-i-am or the ‘hall of public audience’ is where Emperor Shah Jehan addressed the public. Built during 1631-40, the massive hall has a flat roof and is divided into three aisles. Two arched red sandstone gateways on the north and south lead to the hall. The building, originally built in red sandstone, is plastered over with white shell paste resembling white marble. Diwan-i-khas or the ‘hall of private audience’ was used by the emperor to receive the honoured guests and nobility. Built in 1635, the hall has an ornate wooden roof with gold and silver leaves resembling sun rays. Diwan-i-am, also known as the “hall of public audience”, was the place where the Mughal rulers held regular audience with the masses. It was built in the year 1628 by Shah Jahan, the famous Mughal emperor. This hall comprises of beautifully carved 40 pillars, which make the hall look majestic. The Nagina Masjid is located close to this hall.

Air : Agra’s Kheria Airport is located 8 km away from the heart of the city. It will cost about Rs 150 from airport to city by taxi. Agra is connected to Varanasi, Delhi and Khajuraho by air. For other cities, tourists need to take the flight to Delhi. After getting down at Kheria airport taxis and tongas are available at the airport to reach this destination.

Cycle Rickshaw:
Cycle rickshaws are available aplenty in the town of Agra. Travelling through a cycle rickshaw can be quite time consuming, although this is a very cheap mode of travel with charges hovering around Rs 5 to 10.
Tonga:
Tongas are horse drawn carriages that run throughout the town. Tonga charges are very low too, and you can opt for a Tonga ride as it is faster than a cycle rickshaw ride. Charges will range around Rs 5 to 15.
Tempo :
Tempos are also available, and these are shared vehicles which can be more comfortable than buses for slightly elevated rates. Tempo rates will vary from Rs 5 to 10. These are a safe mode of travel and can be taken up during night time.
