Edit Carib’s Leap a historic place in the north of the island where the last Carib Indians jumped from a high cliff. It was here, in 1651, that the last of Grenadas early settlers “Amerindians”, relatives of the North American “Indians”, who had moved up the island chain from South America died. The visitor centre at Carib’s Leap is closed, and the site is now quite overgrown. There were tourist office employees outside the entrance (by the church) who offer a guided tour, but we chose to wander into the site on our own. We couldn’t find out about the history of the site, but there are lovely views north towards.

At Sauteurs (the French word for “leapers”), on the island’s northernmost tip, Carib’s Leap (or Leapers Hill) is the 100-foot vertical cliff from which the last of the indigenous Carib Indians flung themselves into the sea in 1651. After losing several bloody battles with European colonists, they chose suicide over surrender to the French. A commemorative display recounts the event.
