Tawang is a town that is located in the mountainous regions of the state of Arunachal Pradesh and it is a picturesque place. The town is located in the Tawang district and is located at a height of around 3048 meters above sea level. The town of Tawang is known for its many monasteries that are located here and it is also the birth place of the 6th Dalai Lama. The Tawang Monastery is an old place and is one of the primary attractions in the town. The monastery is an extremely holy place for many Buddhists from the Tibetan region and it is the biggest monastery outside the city of Lhasa. The monastery houses a statue of Buddha that is eight meters tall. Another monastery called the Urgelling Monastery is located in the town of Tawang. One can also visit the beautiful orchid sanctuary that is located in the town and this is called as the Tipi Orchid Sanctuary. In order to travel to the town one has to obtain inner line permits and these can be bought at Kolkata, New Delhi, Tezpur and Guwahati. The place also has a unique cuisine and sampling this is a good idea.

Tawang is located in the north-west part of Arunachal Pradesh and is the district headquarters of the Tawang Distict. Situated at an elevation of 3,048 meters and is famous for being the birth place of the sixth Dalai Lama, Nagwang Lobsang Gyatso and is home to the largest Buddhist Monastery in India. By Air : The Tezpur Airport is the best and the closest option for those who are arriving by air. The place is connected by flights from cities such as Kolkata and Guwahati. Taxis are available from the airport and they charge around Rs 7 per km and this is the only option to reach the place.

By Train : Tezpur has the nearest railhead which is around 160 km from Tawang, but the connectivity from other city is very limited.

By Bus : Buses are available for Tawang from Tezpur and other parts of the region and the cost of the tickets is approximately Rs 2-4 per km.
