The picturesque hilltop town was founded in the early 16th century above the valley of the river Metuje. Its beauty and unity of architectural styles make it an appealing destination. From the original fortifications, only the tower Zázvorka has been preserved. The town centre was adapted in the style of Venetian Renaissance with characteristic gables, called “swallow-tails”, which currently decorate only the northwestern part of the square. Over the river, on the place of the former castle was built a valuable renaissance chateau, the interiors of which were adapted by architect Dušan Jurkovič in the styles of folklore-inspired Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The Chateau Tower Máselnice dominates the silhouette of the town.
