Sevagram is an ideal spot where you can merge as one with nature, entirely at peace. This town is located amidst dense forests and greenery, making it an ideal tourist destination. Sevagram is particularly famous for Gandhi’s famed ashram that stands there to this date. This ashram, also known as the Sevagram Ashram, was the first building to be constructed in this place. History buffs will love visiting Sevagram, as they can get a feel of the pre-independence era, and can experience the Gandhian way of life by stepping into the Mahatma’s ashram. The ashram huts in the town of Sevagram are all very simple and modestly constructed with adequate care given only to the basic needs. You can also visit Mahatma Gandhi’s office while in Sevagram as these huts and buildings have been maintained really well. Also called as ‘Bapu’s Office’, this place attracts a lot of local and foreign tourists alike. Gandhi’s hut in Sevagram never ceases to amaze anyone, with its plain construction and furnishing, with only bamboo accessories, mats, and mud tiles serving as items for construction. You can also visit the other prominent huts and cottages in the region, including Parchure Kuti, Kishore Kuti, and Mahadev Kuti.

When Gandhi started his padayatra (foot march) in 1930 from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi for the Salt Satyagraha, he had decided not to return to Sabarmati till independence for India was attained. Independence was not attained at that time and Gandhi was imprisoned for more than two years. On his release he spent sometime travelling. He decided to make a village in Central India his head quarters. He came to Wardha in 1934, at the invitation of Jamnalalji Bajaj. In April 1936, Gandhiji established his residence in the village Shegaon which he renamed as Sevagram, which means ‘village of service’. Gandhiji was 67 years old when he came to Sevagram. From then on, Sevagram has become an inspiring place. Many decisions on important national matters and movements were taken at Sevagram. It became the central place for a number of institutions for the nation building activities devised by Gandhiji to suit the inherent strength of this country.

By Air : Sevagram’s proximity to the city of Nagpur is very helpful, as you can opt for domestic flights to the city of Nagpur and can catch a bus from there to Sevagram. The city of Nagpur has a major airport – the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport. This airport has local flights to the cities of Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad, Pune and Bangalore and also international flights to Sharjah.
By Train : Sewagram are an important railway stations in the state and there are frequent train services from places such as Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Delhi, Banglore, Chennai, Kolkata and all over India. Tickets are affordable and trains are comfortable as well. One can hire an auto rickshaw from the railway station to the city center.
By BUS : There are many buses to the town of Sevagram from the nearby places of Nagpur and Wardha. The town of Sevagram is the nearest town that lies at a distance of around seventy nine kilometres (79 km). Frequent buses will be available from Nagpur to Sevagram, and bus fares will range around Rs 100 for a single trip. Buses can also be taken from the cities of Mumbai, Nasik, Hyderabad, Bhopal, Indore, Vijayawada, Kanpur, Vishakapatnam, and Pune. Deluxe and semi deluxe buses will both be available from these towns and cities.
