Raipur district is important in historical and archeological point of view. This district was once part of Southern Kosal and considered to be under Mourya Kingdom. Raipur city had been the capital of the Haihaya Kings, controlling the traditional forts of the Chhattisgarh for a long time. When Raipur was a part of Madhya Pradesh, it was the second major commercial centre in Madhya Pradesh after Indore.

By Air : Flights to Raipur will be available regularly, and the city houses one of the most important airports in the state – the Raipur airport. This airport has frequent flights to many destinations (locally) including Delhi, Kolkata, Indore and Bhopal. Flights will also be available to Nagpur, Ahmedabad, Bhubaneshwar and Hyderabad. Flight fares from the city of Mumbai to Raipur will range around Rs 6098, and they can also go up till Rs 6467. Flights from New Delhi to Raipur will charge fares of around Rs 7232.

By Train : Trains to the city of Raipur can be taken from Delhi, Nagpur, Mumbai and other cities like Chennai and Bhubaneshwar. Fares for the basic class of travel will range around Rs 398 and fares for air conditioned coaches will range around Rs 1502 for a trip from Chennai to Raipur. Tier One air conditioned coaches will not be available from Chennai to Raipur, although Tier Two and Tier Three classes will be available. Train tickets should be booked in advance, and these are cheaper than bus tickets.

By Bus : Chhattisgarh State buses connect Raipur  with all neighboring cities in Ranakpur. Raipur is 13 Kms from Barauda, 40 Kms from Durg, 76 Kms from Patewa, 79 Kms from Bhatapara, 113 Kms from Bilaspur, 284 Kms from Jagdalpur, 301 Kms from Dhanpunji and is linked through Chhattisgarh State Road Transport Corporation (CSRTC) and some private travel services.
