The navigable Ubangi River also presents a series of rapids restricting commercial shipping just before it knocks at Bangui City. Bangui is situated on the northern bank of the Ubangi River, while the Congolese town of Zongo rests on the other side. The Ubangi River at this point marks the border of the Central African Republic with Congo just before it merges into the Congo River. Founded in 1889 as a French Colony, the capital city of Bangui features several hotels, restaurants and Musee de Boganda, or the Boganda Museum which attracts tourist attention.
Bangui City has been developed as an autonomous commune within the Central African Republic serving as an administrative, trade and commercial center for the entire country. Bangui hosts a river port which makes it accessible from Zongo and Brazzaville through river ferries. Connected through roadways to Cameroon, Chad and Sudan, the Bangui M’Poko International Airport offers the most convenient air-route for visiting the Central African Republic.
