Jalna Fort was commissioned by Asaf Jah who was also known as the Nizam ul Mulk. As per the order of Asaf Jah, Kabil Khan built this fort in 1725. This fort was built along with a citadel, which is located towards the eastern side of the town and is presently known as Mastgad.It is built in quadrangular shape and has bastions in semi-circular shape at the corners. According to reports, both the outer and the inner gates were constructed by Asaf Jah in the years 1723 and 1711, respectively. The citadel has Persian inscriptions on it and a string of chambers and galleries. Presently, the citadel houses the municipal offices.

In order to match the style and fervor of Aurangabad, Nizam ul Mulk Asaf Jah favored to build the Jalna Fort. Asaf Jah ordered Kabil Khan in 1725 to build the fort together with citadel situated to the east of the town and which is today known as Mastgad. The fort is quadrangular in shape, with semi circular bastions at the corners. It is reported that the inner and the outer gates were constructed by Asaf Jah himself in 1711 and 1723, respectively. The citadel bears of Persian inscription recording the date when it was constructed. Within the citadel is a large well containing a series of galleries and chambers which are now filled up with crap.
