The town of Hirakud is located in the Indian state of Orissa. This town is a major tourist destination in the state and is located in the Sambalpur district. The town is located at a distance of around fifteen kilometers from the district headquarters – Sambalpur. One of the developing places in the state, Hirakud is famous for a major dam that was built here during the year 1956. This dam, also called as the Hirakud Dam, can be visited by interested tourists. You can also visit many temples in the town of Hirakud that are quite famous among pilgrims. The Budharaja temple located in this town is a very popular destination that is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is located in a very scenic setting as well, atop the famous Budharaja hill, which is located near Hirakud Dam. Another major temple that you must visit during your trip to Hirakud is the Ghanteswari Temple, also known as the bell temple. The temple once served as a dual purpose lighthouse too, and the many bells in this temple were used as alarms to warn incoming ships. The Leaning Temple, or Huma Temple, is also a very famous destination in Hirakud, and this was built during the 17th century and dedicated to Lord Shiva. The town of Hirakud experiences a tropical monsoon climate, and the main seasons are summers, winters and the monsoon. Summers in the town of Hirakud are hot, and winters are quite cold. The best time to visit Hirakud would be during the winter months when the weather will be very hospitable.

Hirakud Dam is built across the Mahanadi River, about 15 km from Sambalpur in the state of Odisha in India. Hirakud Dam built on Mahanadi River is the longest dam in India. The overall length of the main dam is 4.8 km, and the total length is 25.8 km with dam and dykes taken together. The dam is about 15 km upstream of Sambalpur town in State of Orissa and was the first post independence major multipurpose river valley project in India.

By Air : Flights can also be taken to the airport in Bhubaneswar, from where buses and taxis will be constantly available to Hirakud. Air fares will be more expensive, and charges for a single trip will range around Rs 4,000 to 7,000 through domestic carriers. Regular flights to Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad will be available from this airport.

By Train : The town of Hirakud can be reached through trains that run to the railway station located in the region. This railway station is connected to the cities of Bhubaneswar, Howrah, Ahmedabad, Puri and Koraput by frequent trains. Trains to Koraput and Howrah will be available everyday throughout the week. These trains will charge fares ranging around Rs 239 for the basic class of travel. Air conditioned coaches will be slightly more expensive and they will charge fares of Rs 1,468 (for AC First Class), Rs 881 (for AC Tier Two) and Rs 643 (for AC Tier Three). This is the easiest way to reach Hirakud.

By Bus : Bus is a very common means of transport and various local as well as state run buses connect Kurseong to other parts of the state and country. Fare is around Rs 2-5 per km.
