Detail InformationEdit

Born in 1813, Alois Sprenger ranks among the most popular people who have ever been born here. Alois Sprenger did not approve of the teaching methods of his times. He attended to language studies and learned Latin, Greek, English, French, Italian and Spanish within a short time. He was also dedicated to Eastern languages and studied philosophy, natural sciences, medicine and orientalism in Vienna. Sprenger left Austria and lived in Paris, Zurich and London, where he got married. The couple moved to India, where Sprenger worked as a medical officer. He soon became a government interpreter and examinator for islamic law. At the same time he was head of the universities in Calcutta and Hugli. When he returned to Europe (Heidelberg in Germany) with his family in 1856, he devoted himself to the preservation of Eastern literature, and it was particularly Indian, Persian and Turkish manuscripts that entered his collection. Sprenger was awarded honorary doctorates by the Universities of Gießen, Oxford and Rome. He had acquired the knowledge of 24 languages and 24 Asian dialects throughout his life.
