The Franciscan Order was founded in 1648/49 by Count Adam Batthyány. The Franciscan monastery can be found at the main square in Güssing and was a former corner stone of the town´s fortification.
The monastery accommodates a precious library with 3,484 books. The oldest book is an old mass book from the middle of the 13th century, written on vellum. 211 early prints show the active printing business in Güssing. Works of Carolus Clusius, printed by Johannes Manlius, can be found in the library of the monastery.
