Kannur (Cannanore) is a district of Kerala and is the largest city in the northern parts of Malabar. It has a rich colonial heritage which can be still witnessed today. Being a beach town, Kannur has its own charm and the city has also been voted among the ten best places in the country.Beaches which are clean and pristine are the main attractions of the city and it also has many centers that perform native art of Theyam. The place is also well known for St Angelos Fort, which was built by Portuguese during 16th century but has been demolished and replaced by the Dutch Fort. However, the building is well preserved and maintained by the Archeological Survey of India. Kannur experiences tropical climatic condition like any other parts of the coastal India. During summers (March to May), its hot with a temperature reaching up to a maximum of 38°C, also accompanying a high humidity. Monsoon seasons (June to September) offers heavy rainfalls while the temperature is lower during this period. In winters (December to February) temperatures range in the mid twenties, but sometimes drop to around 16°C during this period.

By Air : The nearest airport is located at Mangalore, which is situated around 125 km from the town. For those who are arriving by air, this is the best option. Taxis can be hired from the airport and this is a good way to reach the place. Taxis cost around Rs 12 per km for a SUV such as a Toyota Qualis and around Rs 7 for a sedan.

By Train : Kannur Junction is an important train station in the State and numerous trains pass through the station on a daily basis. Some of the most important trains are West Coast Express, Mangalore Express, Chennai Mail, Executive Express, Chennai-Mangalore Express, Nagarcoil Express, Mangalore SF Special and many others.

By BUS : Buses are available from many cities in the State and the roads are also in good condition. Government buses ply regularly from Mangalore to the place as well. The cost of tickets varies according to the distance. Buses are the cheapest option to reach the place.

The festival at Kottiyoor in Kannur district involves two temples, situated on the opposite banks of River Bavali – Akkare Kottiyoor and Ikkare Kottiyoor. The annual Kottiyoor festival is celebrated for twenty-eight days and it falls during the months of May and June. Here, the Neyyattam ritual on the first day and the Thirukalasattu ritual on the concluding day are attended by hundreds of devotees.

Onam – Kerala’s National Festival ; Venue:  N.A. ; Period :  August–September ; Details:  Onam is one of the most significant harvest festivals of Kerala. It falls during the first month of the Malayalam calendar which is Chingam (August–September) and marks the homecoming of the legendary King Maveli. Onam is a celebration of Ten days.
