Dhauli is a town that is located in the Indian state of Orissa. This town is located very close to the capital city of Bhubaneshwar, at a distance of around eight kilometers from the city. Dhauli is the famous site where the Kalinga War was fought, bringing about a change in the life of Emperor Ashoka. Dhauli hills are located on the banks of the river Daya, 8 km south of Bhubaneswar in Odisha. It is a hill with vast open space adjoining it, and has major Edicts of Ashoka engraved on a mass of rock, by the side of the road leading to the summit of the hill. Dhauli hill is presumed to be the area where the Kalinga War was fought.Ashoka had a special weakness for Dhauli, where the battle was fought. The Daya river is said to have turned red with the blood of the many deceased after the battle, and enabled Ashoka to realize the magnitude of horror associated with war. He saw to it that Dhauli became an important centre of Buddhist activities. He built several chaityas, stupas and pillars there. He got abodes excavated for the recluse, instructions inscribed for officials, expounded the main principles of dandaniti for the public, provided special status to his new kingdom including the stupas at Dhauli.

By Air : Flights can be taken to the airport in Bhubaneswar. This is because Dhauli does not have an airport in its region. The airport in Bhubaneswar, however, lies at a distance of around thirty five kilometers from Dhauli, and frequent taxis will be available from the airport to this town. Taxi fares and bus fares from the airport to Dhauli will be minimal. Flights to Bangalore, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata will charge fares of Rs 4,500 to 7,000.
By Train : Trains cannot be taken directly to the town of Dhauli, and these need to be taken to the railway station in Bhubaneswar, which is located at a distance of around 38 kilometers from Dhauli. Buses from the capital city to Dhauli will charge fares of around Rs 30 or lesser. Trains to the railway station in Bhubaneswar will be available from all major locations including Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Jamshedpur and Lucknow. Train fares will range around Rs 481 for the basic class of travel. Air conditioned coaches will charge fares of Rs 777 (for AC Tier Two) and Rs 1,296 (for AC Tier Three).
