Udupi is a land of celestial beauty and lies between the abundant mountains of the Western Ghats on the east and the immense calm Arabian Sea on the west. Udupi, more commonly called ‘Parashurama Srishti;, is very popular for its huge cultural inheritance. Udupi is the place of birth of Sri Madhavacharya. He set up the Astha Mathas which is one of the main pilgrimage sites of the state. It is a belief that the name of Udupi is an origination of Odipu, its Tulu name. Whereas some others say that the name is the combination of the Sanskrit words Udu meaning stars and Pa meaning Lord and thus Udupi. Udupi is an authentic treasure trove of tourist’s pleasures. One can find a blazing layout of antediluvian graven temples, modern splendid architectural buildings, beautiful hill chains, pure forests, unending beaches and very friendly people. Spirit worship known as Bhuta kola and Snake worship known as Nagaradhane are the most important cultural traditions in Udupi. Apart from this Aati Kalanja, Karangolu and other festivals like Diwali and Christmas are also celebrated in Udupi. Udupi is better known as the seat of Madhwa rebirth which was founded by the saint Madhwacharya. The outcome of this foundation is Ashtamathas which is situated in the famous Car Street which surrounds the Sri Krishna Temple.
