Kolhapur is an important city in Maharashtra, with a rich history dating back to 300 years, and is situated on the banks of the river Panchganga. The name Kolhapur is famed all over India and abroad for its various specialties like Chappal, cuisine and gur. Legend says that Kolhapur is named after the wish of a demon named Kolhasur, who was killed by Goddess Mahalakshmi. The historical city was an important princely state of Bombay presidency of British rule. The Bhonsle dynasty who ruled during this period was given 19 gun salutes and so Kolhapur was named as 19 gun state during that period. Present Kolhapur city is noted for its political, cultural, commercial and religious importance. Kolhapur is renowned as capital of Maratha film industry and has borne the credit as the place where the first feature film in India – Raja Harischandra was conceptualized. The region is renowned for the localized version of wrestling known as Kushti and also renowned for art and education. Kolhapuri footwear, Kolhapuri jewels and Kolhapuri tobacco are world famous products exported from Kolhapur. A personalized version of necklace known as Kolhapuri Saaj is a specimen of Kolhapur jewel products. Panhalgad hill station, Irwin Agricultural Museum, Mahalaxmi temple known as Dakshin Kashi and Bahubali Jain temple are some of the nearby attractions. Shopping is a wonderful experience in Kolhapur.

Kolhapur (also known as Karveer) is situated on banks of the sacred river Panchganga flowing in southwest part of Maharashtra, India. Famous as the residence of the mother goddess ‘Mahalaxmi alias Ambabai’, this commercial and educational city has temples and palaces which still has archaeological importance. Kolhapur is situated 225 kms south of Pune.

By Air : Kolhapur has a domestic Airport at Ujlaiwadi which is connected to Mumbai International airport. Airport is located at a distance of 13 km from heart of the Kolhapur city. Cab charges about Rs 300 from airport to the city. Mumbai International airport is the major airport nearby, which is at a distance of nearly 379 km.

By Train : The Kolhapur railway station, Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj Terminus, is connected with many cities in India including Mumbai (Mahalaxmi Exp), Pune (Maharashtra Exp), Bangalore (Ranichennama Ex) and Ahmedabad (Ahmedabad Exp). Direct trains are available from Kolhapur to Delhi (Nizamuddin Exp) as well.

By BUS : Kolhapur is well connected by state owned public transport buses. Deluxe luxury buses are available from major cities like Mumbai (379 km) and Pune (225 km) to Kolhapur. Tourist buses charge about Rs 3 – Rs 4 per km.
