Chakrata in Dehradun District of Uttaranchal State of India is a hill station and a famed tourist destination located at an altitude of about 7000 ft above the sea level. The town was known earlier as Jaunsar bawar, a small hamlet of Jaunsari tribel. Yamuna valley is located down the hilly town and the panoramic view of the surroundings from the hillock is astonishing. Chakrata was developed by the British rulers and was a summer retreat for the high executives of English East India Company. Presently Chakrata encloses military cantonment and the access is restricted here for civilian travelers. Chakrata in Dehradun District of Uttaranchal State is located at a distance of 90 Kms from Dehra Dun a Cantonment town in British India. Chakrata is abundantly blessed with natural beauty. The hilly area flanked on either side by the Jamuna & Tons rivers from the tribal region of “Jaunsar Bawar”. The region formed a part of the territory of the Raja of Sirmour and was conquered by the Gorkhas who were, in turn expelled by Britishers in 1854. The first settlement was made by Capt Birch under the orders of British resident at Delhi in 1816-17. Chakrata Cantonment is situated in the middle portion of the tribal area of “Jaunsar Bawar”.

By Air : There is no airport in Chakrata. The nearest airport to the town is Jolly Grant about 115 kilo metes away from the region. Jolly grant is a domestic airport well connected with Delhi airport. Delhi airport is an international airport and well linked with major cities in abroad as well. Tourist from outside the country can easily reach the town via Delhi-Jolly grant to Chakrata. Taxis are available at the airport to Chakrata covering a 3-hour distance. If you hire a taxi that may charge around Rs. 2000 for one trip from Jolly grant airport to Chakrata.Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun : 0135 241 2052.

By Train : The nearest railhead is located in the capital city Dehradun. The distance between railway station and Chakrata town is around 87 kilo meters. It is easily accessible from Dehradun town. Taxis and buses are availed from Dehradun to Chakrata. One can hire a taxi or can share with other passengers which will cost you less amount. Dehradun Railway Station- 0135 – 2622131.

By BUS : Motorable roads connect Chakrata with many cities in Uttarakhand and outside the state as well. Buses are available from ISBT Kashmir Gate to Mussoorie and Chakrata. Buses from Mussoorie and Dehradun district are also available to Chakrata. Chakrata also well connected with Himachal Pradesh by roads via Paonta Sahib. Chakrata is around 311 kilo meters away from Delhi the distance can be covered by 8 hours of traveling.

By Taxi : Chakrata is well connected by a road network and national Highway 72. The tourist can reach to Chakrata by taxi. The normal Indian taxi charges of Rupees 8 to 20 will be charged for each km.
