A fairly modern city situated on the banks of River Niger, Niamey is the administrative, cultural and economic capital and the largest city of the West African country of Niger. Originally founded in the 18th century, Niamey in fact flourished when the French developed a colonial post here in the 1890s. Spread over a 250 square kilometer area atop two plateaus, Niamey is located in the far southwest region of the country. Offering great facilities and unique open air markets, Niamey is home to over 800,000 residents from the Tuareg Sonuri and the Fulani tribes.
Divided by the River Niger, the southern and northern sides of Niamey are effectively connected by the Kennedy Bridge. While the southern side is predominantly residential apart from the university, northern Niamey which holds a number of tourist attractions spreads out in all directions right from the bridge itself. Served by the Diori Hamani International Airport offering scheduled flights to/from Europe, Asia, Middle East, North America and other African destinations, Niamey is also accessible by bus services to/from Benin, Burkina Faso and Mali.
