Discovered by Christopher Columbus in the year 1492, the Islands of the Bahamas are blessed with perfect location extending 760 miles from the coast off Florida. The Bahamas are ready-made for exploration. Initially inhabited by Lucayans, a subgroup of Arawak Indians, these Islands later became a British colony. Due to the important shipping lanes, piracy flourished during the 17th and early 18th centuries in these Islands. Nassau is the political capital and the commercial hub of The Bahamas.
