Home to the fierce and chivalric Svans, this historic part of northwestern Georgia comprising of an extraordinary and surreal mountainous landscape featuring snow, craggy peaks, towers, wine and dancing is now a recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site. The highest inhabited area within the Caucasus, the lower reaches of these mountains feature several deep gorges that are largely covered by mixed and coniferous forests. Well known for historic architectural treasures and picturesque landscape, the indigenous populations of Svanetia are largely bilingual speaking Georgian and their own unwritten Svan language.
Mestia Town, situated in Upper Svaneti serves as the regional capital is comfortably accessible by road from Kutaisi which also has a small domestic airport. Offering wonderful trekking routes, Mestia is well connected through scheduled flights and mini-bus services to/from Tbilisi, the national capital. Other interesting tourist attractions in Svaneti include spectacular journeys to Mount Ushba and Mount Shkhara.
