Detail InformationEdit
Banteay Srei or Banteay Srey, as it is known is a temple situated in Angkor dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva. Built in the 10th century, Banteay Srei is located near the hill of Phnom Dei at a distance of 25 kilometers from the main group of the medieval temples of Yasodharapura and Angkor Thom. This Hindu temple was built by a courtier named Yajnavaraha who was a counselor to King Rajendravarman. Banteay Srei is beautifully made out of red sandstone and decorated with impressive wall carvings which are still clear today.
However, these structures are small in comparison to the standard Angkorian constructions found in other parts of Cambodia. Tourists are attracted to this temple because of its art and aesthetic sensitivity. It is said that this temple was originally surrounded by a town named Isvarapura. The modern name of the temple Banteay Srey means a Citadel of Women or Beauty because of its artistic display and works depicted on the walls in miniature format.
