The quaint town of Djenne with its unique mud architecture was listed amongst World Heritage Sites in the year 1988. The glorious past of the region is finely depicted in the mosques and mud houses that have stood time and has been finely preserved. At some point in time, Djenne served as a flourishing trade centers in the Saharan region and was as important Islamic learning center. The ancient mosque in Djenne is one of its prime tourist attractions.
The mosque finely depicts the Sudanese style of architecture and is beautifully built by using a fine combination of mud and bricks. After every rainy season, the locals take great pride in participating in the ritual of repairing the walls of the largest mud structure in the world. Besides this, the ancient town of Djenne-Jeno, its colorful markets, Moroccan and Turkish style houses are other important tourist attractions in Djenne.
