Snugly situated between Suriname, Venezuela and Brazil along the Atlantic Ocean, Guyana, also known as the ‘Land of many waters’, is the third smallest country in South America. Although hot, humid and tropical, the climate of Guyana is largely moderated by the northeast trade winds which generally bring in flash-floods during the rainy seasons. Spread over a 215,000 square kilometer landscape largely comprising of rolling highlands, low coastal plains and savannah to the south, this former Dutch colony of the 17th century has come a long way since independence from the United Kingdom in 1966.
Largely agrarian, producing rice and Demerara sugar, other economic activities of Guyana include gold and bauxite mining, timber and shrimp fishing. One of the four non-Hispanic South American countries, Guyana is largely similar to the English-speaking Caribbean countries. Served by the Cheddi Jagan International Airport located to the south of Georgetown, Guyana is well connected through scheduled flights with US, Canada, UK and the Caribbean cities of Tobago and Trinidad.
