Monrovia is the capital and the largest city of Liberia, founded in 1822 and named after US President James Monroe, who favored to rehabilitate the freed African-American slaves. Located on the Atlantic Coast, the stunning beaches are prime attractions of this city, where visitors enjoy thrilling watersports activities like swimming, fishing, snorkeling and many others. The Waterside Market is the biggest and popular markets of the city, where the shopaholics can buy a variety of items including textile goods, African clothes, local handicraft and traditional goods.
The National Museum of Liberia, established in 1958 is a prime city attraction, having well-preserved cultural artifacts and other historical items on display. Some of the other interesting tourist attractions of the city are the Kpa-Tawe Waterfalls, Firestone Rubber Plantation, National Hall and the Masonic Temple. The Sapo National Park is the real attraction of Monrovia, where wildlife enthusiasts will encounter several rare species of flora and fauna, including lions, zebras, leopards and many more.
