Founded by the Portuguese as a fortified port and trading center in 1687, this present capital city of Guinea– Bissau is located on the Geba River estuary on the Atlantic coast. An important administrative, military and educational center of the country, Bissau is also a major seaport facilitating exports of peanuts, hardwoods, copra, palm-oil and rubber. Spread over a 77 square kilometer area, Bissau generally lacks development. Served by the Osvaldo Vieira International Airport with scheduled flights connecting to Praia, Dakar and Lisbon, Bissau is featuring quite a few discos and nightclubs with pool tables and dance floors.
