This former Portuguese colony of the 19th century was eventually declared independent in 1973. Spread over a 36,125 square kilometer area, Guinea– Bissau displays an extensive coastline consisting of plains with swamps of mangroves. The Guinea – Bissau Bijagos Archipelago which extends out into the sea is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve consisting of forests and an exquisite wildlife including marine turtles and monkeys. However, with an agrarian dependent economy that is fragile, a majority of the Guinea – Bissau population still live under the poverty line.
Divided into eight regions and one autonomous region for administrative purposes, Guinea – Bissau has developed a number of other popular towns apart from the capital city of Bissau. Predominantly Muslim, respect the culture and traditions of Guinea– Bissau. Some might want to be photographed while others might object; therefore, it is always better to ask before you act. Guinea– Bissau is generally a relaxed country if you can be careful and avoid trouble.
