Opening onto the North Atlantic Ocean in the southern region, the West African country of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire was formerly called as the Ivory Coast by the English speaking British. Identified as one of the prosperous tropical African countries, Cote d’Ivoire has politically and economically closely associated itself with France ever since it gained independence in 1960. Although Cote d’Ivoire is facing political turmoil and civil war for the last couple of decades, it is still far from over at present.
With Abidjan as the capital city and the main administrative center, Cote d’Ivoire offering its seaports plays an important role as a transit trade operator for the neighboring landlocked countries of this region. A part of the western sub-Saharan Africa, Cote d’Ivoire encloses the Tai National Park, the Comoe National Park and the Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve which are now recognized as the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
