Presently the capital and the largest city in Somalia, Mogadishu, originally founded in the 10th century relentlessly thrived as a port town which was always popular amongst the Persian and Arab traders. Situated within the coastal Benadir region of the Indian Ocean, Mogadishu eventually became the capital of Italian Somaliland during the colonial era. Not having an effective government since 1991 has left the transportation network within Mogadishu in utter disrepair, where roads are more of a muddy mess during rains.
War torn, the safest way through Mogadishu is to be escorted by Ethiopian and official Somali troops, or the African Union Peacekeeping Forces. Although there are a whole lot of hotels, restaurants and bars willing to cater to the tourists, individual travel is extremely hazardous and suicidal. A bullet-proof vest and armored vehicle will provide good protection against these immediate threats.
