Sprawled across four ridges and valleys, Kigali has been serving as the national capital of Rwanda since independence in 1962. Located near the geographical centre of the country, it serves as an effective economic, cultural and transport hub of the region. At an average elevation of 5,246 feet above mean sea level, Kigali is mostly ringed by higher hills including a dominating presence of the famous Mount Kigali. With hourly bus services to almost all major destinations within the country, Kigali is the most important gateway for tourists who want to explore Rwanda.
Featuring many hotels and restaurants around a developing tourist infrastructure, Kigali is perhaps the best starting point which is well served by the Kigali International Airport offering daily scheduled flights to Nairobi and Entebbe. However, visitors are advised to learn some French, Swahili and Kinyarwanda before embarking on the Kigali and Rwanda tour as these will come very useful here. In the midst of the Rwandan genocide, Kigali houses several memorials, museums and centers dedicated to the cause.
