Bardhaman or Burdwan is a city of West Bengal state in eastern India. It is the headquarters of Bardhaman district. Bardhaman town is steeped in heritage and has a history that extends back to the sixth century BC. Vardhamana Mahavira, the Jain leader, spent a good amount of time in this city, and hence the city sports his name. There are many temples and sites of religious interest in Bardhaman that are of tourist value.While in Bardhaman, you can visit Curzon Gate. This majestic structure was constructed in 1903 honoring Lord Curzon. You can also visit the Hawa Mahal in Bardhaman, which is yet another destination of tourist importance. The tomb of Sher Afghan and Ambika Kalna are other places of tourist interest. Ambika Kalna houses many brick temples that also have terracotta designs. A huge palace is also located at a distance of around one kilometer from Curzon Gate, and this is a location that you must visit in Bardhaman. Golapbag, which has a vast rose garden, is another popular tourist spot in the place.

HistoryEdit

Bardhaman became a district headquarters of British India. Burdwan is an alternative name for the city, which remains in use since the British period. The origin of this name dates back to the 6th century BCE and is ascribed to Vardhaman Swami or Mahavira (599-527 BCE), the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, who spent some time in Astikagrama, according to the Jain scripture of Kalpasutra. This place was renamed as Vardhamana in his honour. The erstwhile Maharajas of Burdwan in Bengal belong to the Kapoor clan of the Khatri community, and hailed originally from the Punjab. Maharaja Bhadur Tedj Chand Ray adopted Chunilal Kapur who later assumed the Zamindari of Burdwan. Sangram Ray is said to have travelled eastwards on pilgrimage to the temple-town of Puri in Orissa. Thereafter, he travelled further northeast and settled permanently at Baikunthpur near the town of Burdwan, where he and his son, Banku Bihari, prospered vastly as tradesmen and bankers.

By Air : Flights can also be availed, and these will be available till the airport in Kolkata, which lies at a distance of 96 kilometers from Bardhaman. Frequent flights to Bangalore, Chennai, Aizawl, Ahmedabad, Imphal, Jaipur, Hyderabad and Lucknow will be available to Kolkata. Fares will range around Rs 3,383 to 4,353 from New Delhi to Kolkata.

By Train : The town of Bardhaman has a railway station, and trains can thus be taken directly to the town without any hassles. Traveling by trains is by far the best option. This is because trains are cheaper and ticket fares are significantly lesser in trains. This is also a very comfortable mode of travel and tickets need to be booked prior to your trip, by at least two months. Trains will be available from Dehradun, Agra, Howrah, Mumbai and New Delhi to Bardhaman. Trains from New Delhi to Bardhaman will charge Rs 410 for sleeper class travel. Rs 1501 is the fare for air conditioned coaches (AC Tier Two) and Rs 1098 is the fare for air conditioned coaches (AC Tier Three).
