Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary here spreads over an area of 77 sq km in the Thodupuzha and Udumpanchola taluks of the district. Situated at an altitude of 450-748 m above sea level, this sanctuary occupies the forest land between the Cheruthoni and Periyar rivers. There is a scenic lake around the sanctuary, covered by an enchanting canopy of tropical ever-green and deciduous trees, and offers boat rides.
Elephants, bison, sambar deer, wild dogs, jungle cats, tiger, wild boar etc. are seen here apart from various species of snakes including cobra, viper, kraits and numerous non-poisonous ones. Birds include grey jungle fowl, Malabar grey hornbill, several species of woodpeckers, bulbuls, flycatchers, etc. The wildlife here is similar to that of Thekkady. This sanctuary lies adjacent to the world renowned Idukki Arch Dam.

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary, park includes the regions of Udumpanchola and Thodupuzha districts of Kerala, India. The Idukki wildlife park in Kerala, India came into existence in the year 1976. Idukki sanctuary is located in the forest land between the Cheruthoni river and the Periyar river. There is a beautiful lake around the Idukki sanctuary, surrounded by a captivating cover of tropical evergreen and deciduous forests.

Taxi : There are taxi services available from the airport. Kerala taxi services provide extensive taxi services and they can be booked in advance.
Bus : Bus services are also available from Cochin to Idukki, however the buses are crowded and traveling with large luggage is not possible. Buses are very cheap and commute will cost Rs 50. It might be advisable to hire an air conditioned cab as they are comfortable and relatively cheap.
Train : The Nearest rail road station is located at a distance of 113 km at Ernakulam. Kottayam railroad station is at a distance of about 130 km from Idukki.
Air : The Nearest international airport is at Kochi, approximately 104 km from Idukki. From Kochi one can either travel by bus or hire a cab. Travellers taking a connecting flight from Chennai can arrive through Madurai, which is around 125 km from Idukki and will take about 2.5 hours by road.
