The Race Street Friends conventicle could be a historic and still active Quaker conventicle situated in city, Pennsylvania. The conventicle, at 1515 Cherry Street, served because the website of the Yearly Meeting of the Hicksite sect of the spiritual Society of Friends (Quakers) from 1857 to 1955. Inbuilt 1856 by the city Yearly Meeting and what’s currently called Central city Monthly Meeting, a building 131 feet long by eighty feet wide was set fairly near its Cherry Street frontage however sufficiently way back from Race Street to supply a nice open yard.
The structure designed wasn’t only 1 meeting house, but two, thus organized so divided, that either party may lose its property while not moving the property of the opposite. Construction brought 2 meeting rooms thirty six feet high, the northern chamber being sixty feet by 80; the southern, 46 by 80. Every had “youth’s galleries” on 3 sides. Between the 2 meetinghouses, and prodigious them by sixteen feet in total dimension, was a twenty five by 96-foot three-story structure containing massive rooms for committee conferences and alternative functions.
It was at the forefront of women’s involvement each in Quaker faith and in yankee political policy. Several leaders within the Women’s Movement were related to this meetinghouse; these enclosed emancipationist and women’s rights activist Lucretia women’s liberationist, peace activist Hannah merchandiser Hull, and franchise leader and Equal Rights change author feminist. The conventicle was selected a National Historic Landmark in 1993 for its role within the abolishment of slavery, women’s franchise, and therefore the civil rights movement.
