The Gifford farm lies within the heart of the Fruita natural depression, a desert oasis represented by Wallace Stegner as “…a sudden, intensely inexperienced very little natural depression among the cliffs of the Waterpocket Fold, deluxe with cherries, peaches, and apples in season, thickly settled by a couple of families United Nations agency were concerning equally smart Mormons and smart frontiersmen and smart farmers.”¹ The two hundred acre Fruita Rural Historical District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Capitol Reef explanation Association, in cooperation with the parkland Service, has restored and refurnished the Gifford house as a cultural demonstration web site to interpret the first Mormon settlement of the Fruita natural depression. The house depicts the everyday spartan nature of rural Mormon State farm homes of the first decennium. Additionally to the house, the Gifford homestead includes a barn, smokehouse, garden, pasture, and rock walls.
The Gifford Homestead is found one mile (1.6 km) south of the traveler center on the Scenic Drive and is open throughout the summer season. Alittle automobile parking space is adjacent to the Gifford yard. Parking for outsized vehicles is out there at the tract. Follow the signs and path from the tract.
