The Ahwahnee post workplace opened in 1893 to 1896. The name, Ahwahnee, springs from the Southern Sierra Miwok word awwo that, in English, suggests that “mouth.” The Gertrude post workplace was transferred to and renamed to Ahwahnee in 1900, enclosed 1907, and re-opened in 1917.
