The Maritime depository of BC reflects the Pacific maritime history and culture of Canada’s geographical area, with associate exhibits and public program mandate for analysis, education, and partnership.Formed in 1953 by service officers at Signal Hill in Esquimalt, B.C., the Maritime depository of British Columbia Society was registered in 1957 as a non-profit society with a broadened mandate.
The MMBC moved in 1963-64 to Bastion sq., Victoria, British Columbia and was formally opened in Gregorian calendar month 1965. The Maritime depository of British Columbia Foundation was established in 1981 to develop long-run support for the Society. The depository is housed within the 1889 provincial law courts building close to the Inner Harbour that was designed by designer H.O. Tiedemann and later structurally changed by Francis Rattenbury.
The province’s initial Supreme Court on the third floor, that additionally functioned as Vice-Admiralty room and when restoration remains rented as a supplemental court venue, was once presided over by Sir Matthew Baillie Begbie, judge of the Colony of British Columbia.
