The South camping area Amphitheater was designed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934 and 1935. The three hundred work is visible within the masonry of the stage and its holding walls, walkways and steps. Red arenaceous rock was utilized in accordance with NPS Rustic style principles. The initial wood benches were placed on stone blocks and were replaced with metal seats in 1956.
The amphitheater was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on Valentine Day, 1987, reference range 86003717.
