Bethel Protestant denomination in Collegeville, a part in Birmingham, Alabama, served as headquarters from 1956 to 1961 for the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR), that was LED by Fred Shuttlesworth and active within the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement. The ACMHR targeted on legal and nonviolent dissent against separate accommodations, transportation, faculties and employment discrimination. It contend a vital role within the 1961 Freedom Ride that resulted in federal social control of U.S. Supreme Court and interstate Commerce Commission rulings to mix public transportation. The church buildings were bombed on 3 separate occasions, 1st on Dec twenty five, 1956, once more on Saints Peter and Paul, 1958, and eventually on Dec fourteen, 1962.
