Altamont may be a city in Grundy County, Tennessee, u. s.. The population was one,136 at the 2000 census. it’s the seat of Grundy County. Altamont is placed atop the southern range between the plateau’s Highland Rim escarpment to the west and Savage Gulf to the east. The latter may be a scenic gorge sliced by the higher watershed of the Collins stream (Altamont is an element of this watershed) because the stream descends from the tableland to the Highland Rim on the way to its mouth at the Caney Fork in adjacent Warren County. Altamont is encircled by hills on all sides, and therefore the central space of the city itself straddles a flattened-out hillslope.
