Flanigan Ditch was created regarding 1880 by the Flanigan family, Mormon pioneers within the Zion natural depression. The Flanigans nonheritable water rights for some of the flow of Virgin Mary watercourse in 1880 to water the family’s lands on the watercourse. The family was distinguished, with the feature currently proverbial at “The Watchman” known as “Flanigan Peak”, whereas the situation of this watcher bivouac was known as Flanigan Field.
Over time, the farmlands on the lower portion of the ditch were abandoned below this outlet at the watcher bivouac. The buried portion of the ditch is thought to be a possible archaeological feature about the amount of pioneer settlement. The lands close the ditch were nonheritable by the Park Service from the Flanigans in 1960. Of the initial fifteen,000 feet (4,600 m) of ditch, about 12,000 feet (3,700 m) area unit among the park, with the higher third mostly intact however unwatered for a part of its length.
A portion continues to hold water for irrigation of the watcher bivouac. Growth of the park boundaries has enclosed a buried and abandoned portion of the lower ditch. The ditch shares its headworks with the Springdale Consolidated Irrigation Company’s pipeline, that provides municipal water to the city through a pipeline put in in 1988.Flanigan Ditch was listed on the NRHP on Gregorian calendar month twelve, 1998, reference range 97001630.
