Exuma could be a district of the land, consisting of over 360 islands (or cays). The largest of the cays is nice Exuma, that is thirty seven mi (60 km) in length and joined to another island, Little Exuma by atiny low bridge. The capital and largest town in the district is George city (permanent population one,000), supported 1793 and set on nice Exuma. The Tropic of Cancer runs across a beach near the town. The whole island chain is one hundred thirty mi (209 km) long and twenty seven sq. Mi (72 sq km) in area. Exuma was settled in or around 1783 by American loyalists fleeing the Revolutionary War.
The expatriates brought a cotton plantation economy to the islands. George city was named in honor of King of Great Britain, to whom the settlers maintained their loyalty. A number of smaller Cays still stay grandfathered as part or entirely non-public,(still remarked as a part of the Exuma-Bahamas Cays) set by 3 digit suffix range (ex. Exuma xxx) Most noted Exuma 642, and 643 that in recent years, receding shorelines have shortened the life of those explicit adjoined cays. Lord John Rolle, a significant friend settler of the Exumas, could be a major figure within the islands’ heritage. Upon his death in 1835, he presented all of his important Exuma land holdings to his slaves. As a result, variety of towns on Great Exuma are named after him (such as Rolleville and Rolletown).
