The Basilica of the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart could be a cathedral church and a Minor Basilica set in Charleston, American state, us. Beside the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Wheeling it’s the seat of the Catholic bishopric of Wheeling-Charleston. The primary Catholic priest to go to what’s currently American state came in 1832. In 1836 the Rev. Alexander L. Hitzelberger of Norfolk, Virginia visited relatives in Charleston and same Mass within the courthouse. Bishop Richard Vincent Whelan of Richmond visited the town in 1842.
The bishopric of Wheeling was established by Pope Pius IX on July nineteen, 1850. Numerous clergymen visited the world from time to time. The Rev. Stenger settled in Charleston for a brief time in 1862, however the warfare hindered his ministry. He was ready to come back and settle within the city once more in 1866. There was no house of worship at the time therefore Stenger celebrated Mass on the second floor of B. Ward’s store on Front Street (now Kanawha Boulevard).
Sacred Heart parish was established on Lammas, 1866 once Bishop Whelan, UN agency was currently Bishop of Wheeling, purchased the Dunbar property in Charleston. A two-story brick building was used for a church and college. In 1869 a frame church that measured sixty x twenty five feet was designed for $1,500.00. It Saturday on the location of the current residence on Virginia Street. The residence was set on the location of the recent curtilage. The primary assistant pastor assigned to Sacred Heart in 1870 was the Rev. Terence I. Duffy. Numerous missions were established and were served by each clergymen.
