Central State University originated as an ad, traditional and industrial department established at Wilberforce within the late nineteenth century. Within the twentieth century, the department was established as a separate establishment, and expanded to a university and university. The community has 2 traditionally black universities, Wilberforce University and Central State University. Wilberforce University was established in 1856 by the Methodist Episcopal Church and African Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1863 the AME Church bought the school once its temporary closing thanks to monetary issues, creating it the primary to be in hand and operated by African Americans. Several distinguished students have tutored there. The previous residence in Wilberforce of Charles Young, a 19th-century US Army officer United Nations agency tutored at Wilberforce, has been selected a National Historic Landmark. Born into slavery, he was the highest-ranking African-American officer within the US Army till once warfare I.
