Fort McGilvray was a us military fortification placed on Caines Head, a formation 650 feet higher than Resurrection Bay south of William Henry Seward, Alaska. The us Army established a series of defensive positions on the coast of the bay throughout war II to defend William Henry Seward against a doable Japanese invasion. The bay was a strategically necessary location, because it remained unfrozen throughout the year, and William Henry Seward served because the southern terminus of the American state Railroad, a vital route for transporting civilian and military provides throughout the territory.
Defense of the bay before the war consisted of 4 mobile 155-mm guns. The earliest constructions at Caines Head and South Beach on the bay were started on July thirty one, 1941. With the U.S. Entry within the war, permanent mounts for the guns were made at Rocky purpose, south of the location of Fort McGilvray. Plans were approved for 3 new batteries, 2 6-inch batteries, one 90-mm gun, and diverse readying and light positions. Construction was hindered by the troublesome parcel and winter season. By the tip of 1943, the battery at Lowell purpose simply south of William Henry Seward was completed and manned by troops. Placed close to the fort at South Beach were utility buildings and barracks to accommodate the five hundred troopers that supported the area’s defences.
