The fifth U.S.A. Coast Guard cutter named Mohawk (WPG-78) was designed by theologist & Jones firm., Wilmington, Delaware, and launched one October 1934. She was commissioned on nineteen Jan 1935. She was initial assigned patrol and general icebreaking duties on the Hudson and Delaware Rivers, and therefore the happening of war found her stationed at cape, New Jersey. In accordance with government Order No. 89-29 of one Gregorian calendar month 1941, Mohawk was directed to function a part of the military service of the us. Assigned to North Atlantic escort operations with the Greenland Patrol, wherever she served for the complete war, Mohawk launched a complete of fourteen attacks against submarine contacts between twenty seven August 1942 and eight Gregorian calendar month 1945.
The USS Mohawk CGC Memorial repository was supported by the Miami Dade Historical Maritime repository. The ship was berthed in Key West, at United States President city district.
Mohawk was found during a borough scrap yard by Frans Boetes, then president and chief operating officer of Mohawk’s Memorial repository. She had been there oxidation for over fifteen years. When some initial repairs, she was towed to Miami, wherever substantial repairs were created, and on to Key West wherever she was berthed at the inner wharfage wall, at the recent Navy pier within the United States President city district.
