The Mayan Theater at 1014 South Hill Street in l. A. , American state may be a landmark former show palace. Designed by Stiles O. Clements of Morgan, Walls & Clements and opened in August 1927, the facade of the Mayan includes unreal pre-Columbian patterns and figures designed by sculptor Francisco Cornejo. This can be his major work.
Originally a legitimate theater, the Mayan may be a archetypal example of the numerous too ornate exotic revival-style theaters of the late Twenties, Mayan Revival during this case. The healthy lobby is termed “The Hall of Feathered Serpents,” the area includes a lighting fixture supported the Aztec calendar stone, and also the original fireplace curtain enclosed pictures of Mayan jungles and temples.
